I've decided that JK is a totally boring guitarist. Never heard anything remotely original come out of his instrument - just vague, soupy imitations of Garcia without any of the honesty.

Totally agree - there's none of the edge, funkiness, expressiveness... all too squeaky-clean... no soul.

I'm willing to allow for the possibility that he can be great. But that's because I've only ever heard him play for Furthur, and he really doesn't lead that band. I don't know what they'd sound like if he were allowed to set the tempos and call songs and just jam away like Jerry did. That's one of Furthur's underlying structural problems -- they are not co-equals and JK is not a side man.

The slower tempo stuff works if Jerry is there, because he thrives in that environment (see JGB), but Jerry was no ordinary guitarist. I'm not sure that's JK's strong suit.
